As per usual, OPEN Tennis Vol. 3 is packed with art, photography, and exceptional storytelling. With this new issue we continue our vibrant exploration of tennis through the lenses of culture, fashion, travel, and ideas.
Our cover for Volume 3 features a photograph by renowned French photographer, Florence Pernet, taken during the US Open’s new Mixed Doubles Invitational, and it accompanies a rumination on the same by Gerald Marzorati. As we become more and more alienated by technology and the algorithm, OPEN Tennis Vol. 3 explores themes of real-world connections. In it, Simon Cambers advocates for tennis biographies written by actual people; Andrew “Herm” Hermida is back at the Tokyo Open, this time to sketch the fans; and Courtney Nguyen goes deep on the fascinating world of Chinese fan culture; and we present the tennis-y drawings of Adam Green from New York indie folk duo, The Moldy Peaches. Also therein Jackson Frons profiles YouTuber-turned-pro-tennis-player Karue Sell and Joel Drucker explores what makes Czech players tick. There’s also an interview with Lebanese No. 1 Hady Habib and a deep dive into the tennis philosophy of Torben Ulrich by our in-house coach Simon Hegelund. Giasco Bertoli is back, this time having taken a sentimental journey to Switzerland to visit a lonely, riverside tennis court, and Vicente Muñoz made a similarly chilly journey to Providence, where he photographed an Indoor Tennis Court of great distinction. As always OPEN Tennis is the product of Artisanal Intelligence.
